The Little Athletics Trans Tasman Challenge began in 1977. Every year since, a team of U11 and U12 Little Athletes have been selected to represent NSW in a match against a team of young athletes from Auckland, New Zealand. The challenge match is held in Auckland on the even years and in Sydney on the odd years.
The objectives of Trans Tasman are to: foster fellowship and goodwill between participants in children's athletics; provide children's athletics, emphasising enjoyment of participation and personal achievement; enable our athletes and officials to meet with people of another country and learn about their customs; encourage involvement of families on both sides of the Tasman to act as hosts in entertaining in their own homes the visiting contingent and generally provide an interchange of views on the management, administration and promotion of children's athletics in both countries
The 2011 Trans Tasman Challenge is being held at Blacktown Olympic Park on Sunday, January 16, 2011. The LANSW team consists of a total 120 boys and girls from the U11 & U12 age groups, along with 16 reserves.
Anyone is welcome to come and watch the events, which begin at 10am, following the Opening Ceremony at 9.20am.
