Thursday, November 24, 2005

After Australia's thrilling win over Uruguay in the World Cup, the spotlight has been on Socceroos Captain & Goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer.

With the hopes of Australia on his shoulders, Schwarzer, a Blacktown junior, saved two goals during the penalty shoot out and secured Australia a place at the 2006 World Cup - a feat not achieved in 31 years.
Jim Fraser, Head coach of the International Goalkeepers Academy based at Blacktown Olympic Park was the Goalkeeper for Australia when they qualified for the 1974 World Cup and understands first hand critical role a goalkeeper plays in the team.
'The fact that the world cup qualifier was effectively decided by the performance of the goalkeepers, further highlights importance of nurturing the skills of these outstanding athletes ' Says Fraser, who also is the current Goalkeeping coach for Hyundai A League team Sydney FC.
'Our academy offers a specialised coaching program for soccer goalkeepers that not only focuses on physical fitness and technique but the psychological aspects of the position which are so important when placed in the situation Mark was in the qualifier'
The International Goalkeepers Academy is open to goalkeepers aged 10 and over with classes running from 4pm each Thursday at Blacktown Olympic Park.
Who knows - Australia's next world cup appearance could be in the hands of one of these youngsters!
