Blacktown Olympic Park 'Raises The Roof'

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Blacktown Olympic Park 'raised the roof' - literally - with the roof of the 1200 seat grandstand at the Athletics Precinct added in spectacular fashion.

Due to the size of the sheeting required, it was impossible to transport the roll formed sheeting to the venue, so roofing contractors BlueScope Lysaght brought in a mobile roll former to produce the roof sheets on site.

This fantastic piece of machinery can convert flat steel into sheets of roofing through a process know as roll forming.A coil is loaded at one end and the flat steel is fed through a succession of rollers which shapes it to the required profile. The BlueScope Lysaght mobile roll former then tilts upwards on a 25 degree angle, so that it can output sheets direct onto the roof frame. A skid at the leading edge of the sheets allows them to slide over the wire safety mesh into position.

In the year since it was introduced it has provided roofing for shopping centres, aircraft hangars and warehouses in NSW, QLD and South Australia including the new retail outlet centre at Canberra's International Airport.

The grandstand roof at Blacktown Olympic Park is a great achievement for the company, requiring it to produce roof sheets 102.6metres long, the longest produced in Australia to date.

The grandstand is due for completion mid August, however the world class MONDO Athletics Track remains open for training and carnivals.
