Liam’s ‘Reddy’ for the Goalkeeper’s Challenge!
Monday, April 20, 2009
A-League Goalkeeper and former Australian U20 International, Liam Reddy, was a surprise guest recently at the International Goalkeepers Academy at Blacktown Olympic Park. Former Newcastle Jets and current Queensland Roar keeper, Reddy, dropped in on the man he credits for launching his goalkeeping career over a decade ago - Australian football great, Jim Fraser, coaching director of the International Goalkeepers Academy at Blacktown Olympic Park.
27 year old Reddy started training under Fraser's guidance at the age of 11. Fraser immediately recognised Reddy's potential and recommended him to NSW Football's Talent Identification Program.
After 5 years working under Fraser, Reddy earned the number one jersey for NSW in the National Championships and was on his way to a professional career. In 2000, Reddy once again linked up with Fraser, this time at NSL team, Parramatta Power. In 2005 Reddy made the jump from what was now called 'the old NSL' to new A League team, the Newcastle Jets. Two successful years between the Newcastle posts were followed in 2007 by a move north to Queensland Roar. Despite Reddy's solid performances throughout last season, the Roar's drive to the Grand Final came to a heartbreaking end, defeated 1-0 by Adelaide United in the semi-final.
Taking a well-earned break before resuming pre-season training in the next couple of weeks, Reddy couldn't resist catching up with his old mentor whilst visiting family in Sydney. "Jim is a fantastic coach, he's great to talk to, really supportive and a great role model. If I hadn't been under Jim's guidance I definitely wouldn't be where I am today" commented Reddy.
When asked what advice he'd offer to the young goalkeepers at the academy, Reddy said "have fun and enjoy what you're doing. If you can learn from your mistakes you'll always get better."
The International Goalkeepers Academy is part of Blacktown Olympic Park's world class facilities, providing specialist goalkeeper training and development at all levels and ages.
