Thursday, January 15, 2009
The NSW Patriots completed a series clean sweep of South Australia last weekend in the 75th Claxton Shield at Blacktown Olympic Park (BOP) and Manly.
BOP was the venue for Games 1 and 2 on Friday Saturday respectively with Game 3 played at Aquatic Reserve, Manly on Sunday afternoon.
The NSW Patriots dominated both games at BOP, allowing the South Australian's a miserly total of only 3 hits in both games. Game 1 pitcher for the Patriots, Wayne Lundgren, had a personal best performance limiting the South Australian batting line up to a solitary hit in nine innings for a 3 - 0 win to the Patriots.
Tim Cox almost replicated Wayne's performance in Game 2 on Saturday night allowing only 2 hits to the South Australian's, while the Patriots got 10 hits in a game which they dominated in all aspects cruising to a 11 - 0 victory.
Special guest on the Saturday night was Major League player and local boy, Grant Balfour. Now established as a key pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, Grant threw the ceremonial first pitch, signed autographs and was happy to have his picture taken with the fans.
With the series clean sweep this guarantee's the NSW Patriots a semi final spot in 2 weeks time.
