Softball National’s - A Great Hit!

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Australia's best Softballers showed they had what it takes at the Softball National Championships. 12 Open Men's and Women's teams battled it out for the bragging rights to be named National Champions in a fantastic week of competition at Blacktown Olympic Park.

Player's commitment and determination was tested in what was a tough week of competition - where 2 days play was lost due to wet weather. This left only 3 days of competition for the Men's rounds, remaining teams desperately scrambled to make up for lost time and played 4 consecutive games, lasting nearly 8 hours, some finishing close to midnight. The week came to a nail bitting end with the Finals action and spectacular fireworks Friday and Saturday night.

Action exploded at the Open Men's Grand Final Friday night, fuelled by the exciting announcement of the 2009 National Men's Team who will compete in the World Championships in Canada later this year. The ACT, current defending Open Men's Champions, were tough to beat from the beginning - the team itself holds 6 Australian players and proved to strong for Victoria in the Grand Final beating them 4 - 0.

The Women's Grand Final was used to help promote the BackSoftball Campaign, which is the initiative to have softball reinstated into the Olympics for 2016. Listed once again as the Open Women's favourites Queensland Heat were always going to be hard to beat in the Women's Grand Final held on Saturday Night. Brenda De Blaes' home run over the boundary fence wasn't enough to help the ACT, who put up a tough fight in a 2 - 1 loss to Queensland Heat's superstars.
