'Hot' Competition From Across The Tasman!

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Since the 2000 Olympics, Blacktown Olympic Park has proudly hosted many international events, but none hotter than the Trans Tasman Little A's Athletics Gala Day held on 15th January, 2008. On the hottest day of the summer so far, some 350 young athletes from Australia and New Zealand represented their country with pride competing in 9 athletics track and field events.

Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles launched the day's activities with a warm welcome to both local and international guests. Of the 350 athletes who took part, 89 had made the journey from their home in Auckland, New Zealand to take on young athletes from all over New South Wales.

Highlights of this wonderful day included local stand-outs Austin Aokuso coming first in discus and 2nd in shot put, Beatrice Collard taking out first place in the 800m, before joining the victorious New South Wales 4 x 400 relay team and Katrina Shaw who placed first in both the high jump and long jump.

Throughout the day, Blacktown Olympic Park echoed to the chants of "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" but no question that the New Zealand kids more than held their own.

While the competitors stay in the shade as much as possible and drink lots of liquids to stay hydrated, ultimately the organisers thought it best to call it a day around 3pm with temperatures breaking into the 40's - a decision welcomed by all as a cool swimming pool beckoned for the children.

All in all, a hugely successful and fun day that proves the Trans Tasman rivalry is alive and well - even at junior level!
