Blacktown City Mayoral Shield at Blacktown Olympic Park
Tuesday, August 3, 2010
Western Suburbs and Pennant Hills were playing for more than just competition points in Round 15 of the Sydney AFL Competition on Saturday July 31, with the teams contesting the annual Blacktown City Mayoral Shield at Blacktown Olympic Park.
Despite a fourth quarter comeback from Pennant Hills, Western Suburbs proved too strong claiming the title for the second consecutive year with a 9.9.63 to 6.6.42 win.
The annual Mayoral Shield match between Pennant Hills AFL Club and Western Sydney AFL Club began in August 2009 as part of the opening celebrations for the new AFL/Cricket Centre at Blacktown Olympic Park.
Since the Centre's opening, it has hosted a variety of regional, state and national AFL competitions including the AFL State PSSA Carnival, the NAB Under 16 National Championships, Sydney AFL Competition and Finals and the NAB Cup Pre season game between the Sydney Swans and Carlton Blues.
The Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Charlie Lowles, attended the game on Saturday and was delighted by the calibre of AFL on display.
"Both Pennant Hills and Western Sydney played an exceptional match. I congratulate Western Suburbs for retaining the Mayoral Shield and look forward to the finals of the Sydney AFL competition to be played here at Blacktown Olympic Park, the heart of sport in western Sydney in September" said Mayor Lowles.
