History in the Making as Swans Soar at Blacktown Olympic Park

Thursday, February 25, 2010

It was history in the making at Blacktown Olympic Park on Saturday February 20, with the new AFL/Cricket Stadium hosting its first elite AFL match between the Sydney Swans and Carlton Blues in Round 1 of the NAB Cup.

Close to 10,000 spectators packed the stadium, to enjoy the fiercely competitive contest with the Swans claiming victory in a 12 point win 2.7.11 (71) to 0.8.11 (59) - their first win in the Pre-Season series in 9 years!

And the action was not just limited to the field. 2010 Australian Idol Winner Stan Walker sang up a storm in the pre match entertainment and with jumping castles, Auskick Clinics, face painting and even cartoon characters Bart Simpson and Ben 10, it was an evening to remember for everyone.

Team GWS Head Coach, Kevin Sheedy, made a very special presentation to Mayor of Blacktown City, Councilor Charlie Lowles in recognition of the City's support for the new Blacktown based Western Sydney team.

With the game sold out well in advance, Blacktown Olympic Park is looking forward to hosting future AFL Matches and further cementing its place as the home of AFL in Western Sydney.

The Swans travel to Melbourne this weekend to take on St Kilda in Round 2 of the NAB Cup , but will return to Blacktown Olympic Park on March 6.
