Local entertainers at their best at the 2010 Relay for Life

Friday, October 15, 2010

Fireworks, live entertainment, fun and games are some of the great draw cards for the 2010 Blacktown City Cancer Council Relay for Life event scheduled over the October 30 - 31 weekend at Blacktown Olympic Park Athletics Centre.

Billed as a 'Team Event to Fight Cancer', Relay for Life involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns to walk laps around Blacktown Olympic Park's athletics track. Relay for Life is an overnight event - enabling walkers to come and go as they please, or pitch a tent next to the track and stay the night.

The Relay begins at 10am with a Survivors Walk where cancer survivors and their carers take to the Blacktown Olympic Park athletics track for the opening honorary lap.

Live performances will be in abundance throughout the day featuring a range of entertainers including Blacktown Country Music Club, Celtic Dreamtime, Roaring Days, Natasha Eloise, Toongabbie Music Club, Steve Fogarty, Yasmin Arkinstall, Katie Vincent, Impace Dance, Cerdon College, Extravadance, Cindy's Dance School, Aquarius Dancers and Peter Rogers Show Stoppers.

Amongst the talent will also be Blacktown City Senior's Choir group, Simply Voices. Simply Voices are longstanding supporters of the Relay for Life and earlier this year held a charity concert which raised $1400 for the Cancer Council.

At 6.00pm, one of the highlights of the Relay for Life will be the Miss Relay beauty pageant, where male team members are dressed up by their fellow team members to impress a crowd of pageant judges.

At 8pm, the Candlelight Ceremony will see the Athletics Track at Blacktown Olympic Park light up with hundreds of candles, paying tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer and those who are still fighting. The moving ceremony will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display and is open to the local community and residents, who are encouraged to come along and take part by purchasing a candle on the night for a gold coin donation.

"The community passion and spirit displayed throughout the Candle Light Ceremony is truly heart-warming. This year's Ceremony will be even more special, as we also unveil the new Rose Garden at Blacktown Olympic Park to honour those whose have been touched by cancer," said Blacktown Relay for Life Chairperson, Leanne Brindell.

"I encourage the community, even if they aren't in a Relay team to come down at 8pm to witness the Candle Light Ceremony and get a glimpse of what this event is really about," continued Leanne.

"The Relay for Life unites people all ages and of all backgrounds and showcases the generosity of our local and wider community at what is a truly rewarding and touching event," Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton said.

"The Relay is also an opportunity to recognise those who have survived cancer and celebrate those who have lost their fight," Mayor Pendleton said.

The 'After Party Band' will entertain the crowd from 8.45pm and on into the night, performing 70's music to coincide with this year's '70's Disco' theme.

The Blacktown Relay is still open for teams to register, with 74 teams already signed up and raring to go. Over $156,000 has been raised by the Blacktown City Relay for Life, however more teams and fundraising is needed to assist those fighting the battle against cancer.
