Olympic Champions Claim Victory at Blacktown Olympic Park

Thursday, March 25, 2010

2008 Olympic Gold Medalists Japan has claimed victory over the Australian Women's World Championship Softball Team by 3 games to 2 in the International Series held at Blacktown Olympic Park from April 18 to 20.

Day 1 of the competition saw the 'Aussie Spirit' off to a great start with a hard fought 3 - 2 victory over their rivals. Game 2 saw the series squared with Japan scraping home for a 2 - 1 win.

Day 2 again saw the teams deadlocked as Australia claimed Game Three 3 - 0 before Japan bounced back with a 6 - 1 thrashing in Game Four.

With the series up for grabs both Australia and Japan were looking to dominate the fifth and deciding game. In a hard fought battle the defending Olympic Champions proved too strong and took out the game and the series with a 6 - 1 victory.

Mayor of Blacktown City, Councilor Charlie Lowles, thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle and was very impressed with the level of skill displayed by both teams.

"It was a pleasure to see the new Aussie Spirit team in action for the first time. I wish the team every success in the upcoming World Championships and I'm sure they will do Australia proud," he said.

Japan and Australia will meet again later this year when they both compete for the World Championship in Caracas, Venezuela from June 22 to July 3.
