Monday, September 13, 2010
Olympic heroes, past and present joined with business and community leaders from across western Sydney to celebrate '10 Years of Sport at Blacktown Olympic Park' at a special luncheon on Friday September 10.
2004 Athens Olympic Baseball Silver Medalist Glenn Williams, 1956 Melbourne Olympic Soccer Goalkeepers Ron Lord and Bill Henderson and Sydney 2000 'Ollyroos' Soccer Goalkeeper Coach Jim Fraser joined special guest speaker Olympic and Commonwealth Medallist Geoff Huegill at the luncheon, which celebrated Blacktown Olympic Park's legacy as a playing and training venue for Athletics, Baseball and Softball during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Geoff's inspirational comeback to competitive swimming after early retirement in 2007, to once again wear the green and gold for Australia in the upcoming 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games captivated the guests along with his great sense of humor which saw the origins of his unique nickname - 'Skippy' revealed!
'It gives me great pleasure to be celebrating 10 years of sport at Blacktown Olympic Park, whilst looking towards an exciting future for Blacktown Olympic Park - a future which will see Blacktown Olympic Park as the home of Team GWS, Western Sydney's very own AFL team, and home to the Sydney BlueSox, who will play in the new National Baseball competition.' said Councillor Charlie Lowles, Mayor of Blacktown City.
'Over the last 10 years, Blacktown Olympic Park and Blacktown City Council has not rested on its laurels as an Olympic legacy venue but actively engaged the community through a variety of sporting and community events'
'And all of these events enhance the sporting and leisure opportunities available to the people of Blacktown and the wider Community of Western Sydney.'
