'HOME' OF THE GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS
Mayor of Blacktown City and Chairman of Blacktown Venue Management Councillor Alan Pendleton joined with Greater Western Sydney GIANTS Chairman Tony Shepherd to officially open Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney's Training and Administration Centre on Saturday August 6.
'Home' to the GWS GIANTS, who join the AFL Premiership in 2012, the $3million facility features five linked buildings, an outdoor deck area, office space for up to 100 staff, an elite gym, player change rooms, sport science and medical treatment rooms as well as match review and player support facilities.
The Centre will be home to the staff and players of the GIANTS here in Blacktown, housing the Football Operations, Membership, Corporate, Marketing and Administrative sections of the Club in addition to enhancing the Club's existing playing and training facilities within the Park's AFL/Cricket Centre.
Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney (formerly Blacktown Olympic Park) has been hosting the GWS Giants North East AFL (NEAFL) Competition games this season as a warm up to joining the Premiership next year. The Sportspark has also been the venue for some fantastic GWS Giants & AFL community based programs over the past 12 months.
'The development of the Training and Administration Centre, a joint venture between the AFL, the GWS GIANTS and Blacktown City Council, is a project which we believe is not only a great investment for the Sportspark but for the City in general and the greater western Sydney region. Council have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the AFL and today marks yet another milestone in what I am sure will continue to be a positive and beneficial partnership long into the future' said Mayor of Blacktown City Councillor Alan Pendleton .
'We are delighted to be the home of the GIANTS and look forward to a continued relationship and their growing presence and involvement within the Blacktown community. On behalf of Blacktown Council and the Blacktown Community we wish the GIANTS all the best in their run to the 2012 Premiership Competition. ' added Mayor Pendleton
Chairman of Greater Western Sydney Giants, Tony Shepherd is very appreciative of the support Blacktown City has shown the Giants on their journey so far.
'The support of the Blacktown Community and City Council has been pivotal in the development of the GWS Giants and each of us associated with the Giants are proud to call Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney 'home', Mr Shepherd said.
Guided by our four key pillars of health, harmony, education and employment, the GWS Giants are committed to establishing a community based football club that is truly representative of the people of Greater Western Sydney' said Mr Shepherd.
'As we continue on our exciting journey, we are keen to work together with Blacktown City Council on a variety of events and initiatives that acknowledge Blacktown City as the home of the Greater Western Sydney Giants and which we hope will provide the Blacktown community a sense of ownership in their AFL team.'
The GWS Giants complete their regular 'home' NEAFL season at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday August 27 at 2.00pm. The game will form part of the annual Blacktown City 'Family SportsFest' festivities which commence at the Sportspark's AFL/Cricket Centre from 12pm.
