Blacktown makes GIANT History

Blacktown Olympic Park became a part of AFL History on Saturday, February 19 when a new look pre season NAB Cup saw competition newcomers Greater Western Sydney GIANTS and Gold Coast Suns play in a round robin style match alongside the Sydney Swans.

A sell out crowd of 10,000 spectators watched in excitement as home team, the GIANTS, aimed to make their mark in what was their first real taste of AFL competition at their home in Blacktown City.

While most fans sported the well known red and white guernsey, there was plenty of support for the GWS GIANTS with bright orange standing out in the crowd. GIANTS were defeated by the Swans in Game one, taking a 0.4.4 to 13.5.83 loss. The team of youngsters came back with more enthusiasm against the Suns in Game three, making them fight to the end for their eventual victory - GIANTS 4.3.27 Suns 8.4.52. The Suns also defeated the Swans in Game two - Swans 3.4.22 Suns 4.1.25 to proceed to the next Round of the Nab Cup pre season competition

The GIANTS will next take to the field in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) The NEAFL competition kicks off on April 2 and GIANTS will have their first home game at Blacktown Olympic Park in Round 3 on Saturday, April 16.
