International Football Kicks into Blacktown

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

International Football came to Blacktown for the first time with the Olyroos, Australian Under 23 Team putting their skills to the test in a training match against the Singapore National Under 23 Team at Blacktown Olympic Park on 14 June.

The Olyroos had been scheduled to play the training match in Gosford over the weekend, but torrential rain saw the game rescheduled to Blacktown Olympic Park's Soccer Facility.

The friendly game, in which the Olyroos claimed a 6 - 0 victory, was a key training opportunity in the lead up to their Olympic qualifier games against Yemen on June 19 and 23.

The Olyroos need to win the two matches against Yemen on aggregate to progress to the next round of Olympic qualification..

Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck and FFA National Technical Director Han Berger were both on hand to watch the best up and coming talent in action that included A-League players Kofi Danning, Jason Hoffman, Marko Jesic, Mustafa Amini, Aziz Behich and Scottish-based midfielder Aaron Mooy.

Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton welcomed both teams to Blacktown City before kickoff.

'On behalf of Blacktown City, I wish the Olyroos a successful Olympic qualifying campaign', said Mayor Pendleton.

'Blacktown City prides itself on being the home to high quality sporting facilities, such as Blacktown Olympic Park and we would welcome the Olyroos and Football Federation Australia back to the Park for training sessions and matches in the future.'

Speaking after the match, Olyroos Coach Aurelio Vidmar was not so concerned with the final score line, but more than happy with the solid hit-out in the lead-up to this weekend's Olympic Qualifier against Yemen.

"It was frustrating not to play on Sunday afternoon due to the rain, but full credit to the Blacktown City Council and Blacktown Olympic Park to host this match at very short notice," said Vidmar.

"Going into today's match it was very important for us to have a good work-out leading into our matches against Yemen.

"Although the score was a little flattering I was very pleased with the way we played and the intensity that we played at for the whole ninety minutes"

The soccer facility at Blacktown Olympic Park is home to Football Federation Australia's Under 13's Skillaroos programs, with the program's training sessions and matches held at the Park.

The International Goalkeepers Academy, led by former Socceroo Jim Fraser, also calls Blacktown Olympic Park home; offering a specialised program for goalkeepers of all ages and skill levels weekly and during school holidays.
