Pennant Hills Claim Their First Mayoral Shield

Western Suburbs and Pennant Hills were playing for more than just competition points in the Sydney AFL Competition on Sunday 7 August, with the teams contesting for the annual Blacktown City Mayoral Shield at Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney.


Pennant Hills proved too strong for Western Suburbs and denied Wests their third consecutive Mayoral Shield title with an impressive 19.16 130 to 7.10 52 win.


The annual Mayoral Shield match between the Pennant Hills and Western Suburbs Australian Football Clubs began in August 2009 as part of the opening celebrations for the new AFL/Cricket Centre at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton presented Pennant Hills Captain Damian Dell Aquila with the shield, which celebrates Blacktown City Council's partnership with the AFL.

"Blacktown City Council continues to enjoy a strong and productive partnership with the AFL and we continue to host a variety of AFL Competitions ranging from the NAB Cup, the GWS GIANTS NEAFL Competition home games and the Sydney AFL Competition," Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton said.


"Both Pennant Hills and Western Suburbs played an exceptional match. I congratulate Pennant Hills on claiming their first Mayoral Shield and I look forward to the finals of the Sydney AFL competition to be played in September here at Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney, the heart of sport in western Sydney," Mayor Pendleton said.

Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney will host the GWS GIANTS final NEAFL Home Game of the Season on Saturday 27 August to coincide with the annual Blacktown City 'Family SportsFest'. Entry to both the SportsFest and GIANTS match is FREE.
