Sport in Western Sydney Has a New Name!
Monday, May 2, 2011
From 1 July 2011 sport in Western Sydney will have a new name!
Blacktown Olympic Park on Eastern Road Rooty Hill is to be re-named 'Blacktown International Sports Park Sydney'.
Developed as a major playing and training venue for Athletics, Baseball and Softball for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the Park has continued to grow and develop, welcoming AFL, Cricket and the International Goalkeepers Academy to the 'family' over the past 10 years.
Owned by Blacktown City Council and managed by Blacktown Venue Management Ltd (a company wholly owned by Council), the venue is 'home' to 2 national sporting teams - the GWS Giants (AFL) and the Sydney BlueSox (Baseball). With almost ½ million visitors per year, the Park has become so much more than simply an Olympic legacy site - it has become a major national and international sports venue of repute.
The new name and logo were developed to capture the Park as it is today and as it hopes to be in going forward into the future. The Olympic spirit and legacy will always be at the heart of the venue but with the expansion of sports and facilities in recent years, plus 2010 marking 10 years since the 2000 Olympics, it was opportune to 'freshen up' the Park's profile.
'This is an exciting time for Blacktown City, as the new name and logo for our flagship sporting venue acknowledges its growing status on the International and National sporting stage.' said Mayor of Blacktown City, and Chairman of Blacktown Venue Management, Councillor Alan Pendleton.
'Blacktown International Sports Park Sydney will continue to provide opportunities for the people of Blacktown and the wider regional community. Whilst the word 'Olympic' will no longer appear in the name, Blacktown City Council is committed to retaining and celebrating the Olympic legacy long into the future. Signage from the Games will be revitalised as part of the renaming process with plans afoot for legacy areas, memory spots and Olympic imaging within the Park" Mayor Pendleton added.
An advertising campaign featuring sporting personalities from each of the stakeholder sports at Blacktown International Sports Park Sydney's has commenced across Western Sydney to ensure the public are aware of the name and brand change
The contact number for the venue will remain as 9839 6591, however the new web address is www.blacktownsportspark.com.au

Blacktown International Sports Park Sydney Name and Logo Information
The use of the word Blacktown as the prominent destination marker within the name instills a sense of pride and ownership within the local community and reinforces the parks relationship with the community.
Sydney is a major geographic marker giving the venue credence internationally.
International provides status as a first class sporting facility and aligns the venue with fellow Olympic legacy venues throughout western Sydney such as the Sydney International Regatta, Shooting and Equestrian Centres.
The term, Sports Park provides a connector to the Western Sydney Parklands in which Blacktown International Sports Park Sydney resides and creates a sense of fun, open space and community about the venue.
The Two Boomerang Logo
The current Blacktown Olympic Park logo comprises 3 interconnecting boomerangs represented the three Olympic sports based at the Park - Athletics, Baseball and Softball.
With new sports such as AFL, Cricket and Goalkeeping joining the venue the logo was no longer representative of the Park and its future growth.
The use of two boomerangs in the 'Blacktown International Sports Park' logo symbolises the Park's core business - community and sport - whilst reflecting the indigenous heritage of the city and region. Boomerangs are also Australian icons and the nature of a boomerang is to return, just as we hope sport participants and visitors of Blacktown International Sports Park Sydney will do!
