State Softballers head to Blacktown Olympic Park
Thursday, June 2, 2011
Teams from across the state will make their way to Blacktown Olympic Park this weekend for the Women's Under 19 Softball State Championship.
From June 3 to 5, teams from Southern Districts, Penrith City, Cumberland Nepean, North Shore, Sutherland, Northern Country, Manly Warringah, Macarthur, Wagga Wagga, Georges River and Nepean will vie for the Championship title.
Defending champions Hornsby will be looking to take out a consecutive title having won the 2010 final in Wagga Wagga. The Hornsby team will be led by local player, Georgia Casey (Stanhope Gardens), who has just been selected for the Australian Under 19 team. With Georgia's teammate Rachel Sechi (St Ives) having also been chosen for the Australian squad, Hornsby will prove hard to beat in this Championship.
Taylah Tsitsikronis (Silverdale), playing for Penrith City, and Jessica Meyer (Turramurra), playing for North Shore, have also been selected for the Australian squad. Casey, Sechi, Tsitsikronis and Meyer will all head to South Africa in December to represent Australia at the Softball World Championships.
The Women's Under 19 State Championship is the first stage of the selection process for the 2012 NSW Under 19 team due to play in Perth in January 2012 - so all players will be looking to impress. Teams to watch in this competition are Hornsby, North Shore, Manly Warringah and Penrith City.
The first games will get underway this Friday with Southern Districts going head to head with Penrith City and Cumberland Nepean taking on the North Shore at 7pm.
