Canada Claim the 2008 International Softball Challenge

Friday, March 28, 2008

Canada has claimed the 2008 Softball International Challenge with a 2 - 1 win over Japan in the Final at Blacktown Olympic Park on Sunday 16th of March.

Competition was fierce over the five days, with the tournament an essential step in the teams' warm-up for the Beijing Olympics, later this year.

The Final was tightly contested all the way through to the eighth innings when Canadian Jennifer Salling ran home, and was on the next ball by team-mate, Caitlin Lever. Japan hit back with Misato Kawano scoring off team-mate Motoko Fujimoto but it was not quite enough with Canada claiming victory over one of the Olympic favourites.

The five day four-team tournament provided great entertainment for spectators with Australia and China both going close to qualifying for the final.

The high quality softball action at Blacktown Olympic Park continues from the 15th to 19th April, as State takes on State in the Under 23s Women's Nationals.
