Major League Hero Inspires Baseball Stars Of The Future
Tuesday, May 12, 2009
NSW Baseball have proudly announced the 'signing of the season' with Australian Olympian and Major League superstar, Glenn Williams joining the team as Manager of High Performance and Baseball Operations. Williams recently retired after an outstanding 15 year professional Baseball career which included playing a starring role for the Minnesota Twins in the US Major Leagues and representing Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics. With numerous offers on the table, Williams decided that helping develop the future of the game in Australia was what he wanted to do more than anything else.
Based at Blacktown Olympic Park, the new role will see Williams manage all elite training squads, oversee state team coaching and co-ordinate baseball's operational and resource needs. Williams is thrilled with the appointment stating, "I am so fortunate to have an opportunity where I am able to give back to Baseball in Australia - a sport that has given me so much over the years."
Inspired by his father, a former NSW and Australian International baseballer, Williams' career took off at age 16 when he signed for the Atlanta Braves in the USA. From there Williams went onto represent the Toronto Blue Jays and the Minnesota Twins. Williams is now looking forward to teaching and supporting young players, just like his dad did for him.
Williams recalled representing Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics was a particular career highlight - especially as the team went on to achieve their best ever Olympic performance, coming away with the Silver Medal. Williams has fond memories of playing at Blacktown Olympic Park in Olympic qualifiers and Claxton Shield Championships. "The opportunity to be a part of such a great venue with outstanding facilities is something I'm really looking forward to" said Williams adding with a quip, "working with these kids and helping them achieve their dreams and aspirations is everything a retired ball player could wish for."
