National Championships Shine on Softball NSW Diamonds

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Victoria have claimed the Under 23 National Softball Championship at Blacktown Olympic Park on Saturday 19th April with a close 4 - 3 win over NSW in a rain marred final.

As the teams warmed up clouds looked menacing but held off until the first batter from Victoria took to the plate. As the batter faced the second ball, the heavens opened and play was stopped.

Getting back to the game looked doubtful but a determined team of staff worked tirelessly to have the diamond ready for play after only a hour long delay

The weather held out for the rest of the game with Victoria scoring 4 runs by the 5th innings. In the sixth innings Rachel Zucchetti scored first for NSW followed by Renee Gloss. Kelly McNaughton came close but was forced out at home with Leah Bradley scored the last run of the game which was not enough for victory. The home team going down by 1 run to their Victorian opponents

The individual awards were spread throughout the 3 highest placed teams:

Most Valuable Player Lauren Olsen ( Victoria)

Batting Award Jade Wall (Queensland)

Pitching Award Kaia Parnaby (NSW)
